World Military Power

About this app

World Military Power brings together open-source information about the armed forces of the world: budgets, soldiers, land, air and naval equipment and nuclear forces. It is for education and general knowledge.

How the strength score works

Each country gets a score from 0 to 100 built from six areas: finance (25%), air power (20%), manpower (15%), land forces (15%), naval power (15%) and nuclear forces (10%). Each area uses a logarithmic scale against the largest country, so very large numbers do not swamp everything else. This is our own transparent method — it does not measure training, technology quality, alliances or morale, which matter a great deal in real conflicts.

Data sources

World Bank World Development Indicators (military expenditure from SIPRI, armed forces personnel from IISS), IISS The Military Balance (equipment), Federation of American Scientists (nuclear warheads).

All figures are public estimates and may differ between sources. Real military capability depends on much more than numbers.
